About Puck Your Odds
Puck Your Odds is a hockey betting analysis site. You'll find NHL picks, game-by-game analysis, team previews and longer articles on the NHL, its teams, the numbers behind the game and betting itself. Every pick stays on the record, win or lose.
How it works
It starts with data, not hunches. Our database covers every NHL game since 2008-09: team and player stats, shot-level data, goalies, schedules, coaching changes and years of historical betting odds.
AI is our research partner. It helps turn questions into testable ideas about what moves a hockey game and what the betting market might miss, writes the code to test them, and double-checks the results. Some ideas hold up. Most don't, and those get dropped.
From team ratings to picks
A pick goes through three steps, and knowing them explains why our team rankings and our picks don't always point the same way.
- Our own view of every team. We rate each team on how well it actually plays, not just its record, and adjust for age, roster moves and luck that won't repeat. That's where the tier letters (A to E) in our team previews come from: a season-long view of how good a team is.
- The market as the starting point. For a single game, the betting market is the best estimate there is. Thousands of bettors and bookmakers have already priced in injuries, form and everything else. So our estimate for each game starts from the market, not from our team ratings.
- Adjust only where we've proven the market is off. We move the market price only for factors that passed a hard test: replayed against years of historical odds, they would have made money. Each past season was tested with a model built without that season's games, so it can't simply memorize the answers. What's left after that is a small, specific edge, and we bet only when it's big enough. The size of the edge and the likelihood of the outcome set the stake.
That's why a team we rate lower over a season can still be the favorite in our numbers for a single game. The rating says how good we think each team is over a season. Our numbers for the game say where we see betting value tonight.
What you'll find here
- Daily NHL picks. A game-day post for every NHL game day, with a short take on each game and our bet, if there is one.
- Team previews. How good each team really was, what changed over the summer, and what that means when you bet on them.
- Analysis and explainers. Deeper dives into the NHL, its teams, the numbers behind the game and betting itself, and what actually matters when you bet on hockey.
- A public track record. Every pick, with the odds and stake at the time it was posted.
How to read the picks
- Regulation time. For now the focus is the NHL and the 1X2 bet on the first 60 minutes: home win, draw or away win. Overtime and shootouts don't count, at least for now. We're considering other bet types, such as moneylines and totals, and other leagues, such as Finland's Liiga.
- Odds at publication. You'll see the best price we found across major EEA-licensed bookmakers when the post went up, plus the lowest odds at which the pick is still worth taking. Prices move, so check your own bookmaker before you bet.
- Be selective. Most games offer no value, and skipping them is usually the best bet there is. If you bet, stick to the clearest spots.
- Our probabilities. Every game shows our probability for each outcome over 60 minutes and the fair odds that go with it. These are the same numbers our picks come from. Multiply our probability by the odds you're offered: anything above 1 means expected value.
- Units. Stakes run from 1 to 10 units. In our own bankroll, 10 units is 3% and 1 unit is 0.3%. A bigger stake means a bigger gap between our estimate and the price, on a more likely outcome.
- Early lines. Picks go up well before lineups and starting goalies are confirmed. If a key player is ruled out, or someone important comes back, take that into account.
Independent
We have no affiliate or paid partnerships with betting sites, and we don't earn anything from where or whether you bet. We don't recommend or link to specific bookmakers. The odds we show are the best price we found across major EEA-licensed bookmakers at publication, so you can compare them with your own licensed bookmaker.
We place our own bets with bookmakers licensed in the European Economic Area (EEA: the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), and the odds quoted with our picks come from those books. If you bet from Europe, that's a useful filter: EEA licensing means player protection, and in many countries it also decides how winnings are taxed, so check the rules where you live.
Betting from the US, Canada or anywhere else? Use the licensed sportsbooks available where you are. Our probabilities and the "bet at X or better" line work the same with any bookmaker: if your book offers that price or more, the bet passes our rule. (American odds: +150 is 2.50 in decimal, -150 is 1.67.)
What we can't promise
Wins. Even a good bet loses often, the same way a great team loses games it deserved to win. A week of results tells you very little, so judge any tipster, us included, over hundreds of picks. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and see responsible betting if it ever stops being fun or starts to run your life.
